String quartet 'Fin de Siècle':
"1893: Looking East / Looking West"

NEW DATE: April 6, 2024

1893 marks the year in which Antonín Dvorak and Claude Debussy looked outside their native lands to create two especially original string quartets. The musical pace of Dvo?ák's “American” string quartet is undeniably a result of his days spent in the simple paradise of the Iowan countryside, being inspired by the Native American and Afro-American musical folk idioms with which he had contact or had closely observed. Clearly impressed by Eastern exoticism (such as hearing Javanese gamelan music and travelling through the Russian countryside), Claude Debussy’s only string quartet exudes ground-breaking sonorities, impressionistic textures and unveils a “modern” sensual atmosphere. This program offers a vast canvas upon which two great composers extracted exotic sounds of the West and East, resulting in two of the most beloved string quartets in the repertoire.

Formed in 2017, 'Fin de Siécle' is a period instrument string quartet focusing on repertoire of the 19th and early 20th centuries. By working closely with Prof Dr Clive Brown, a renowned expert on performance practice of the 18th and 19th century, the string quartet's interpretations are historically informed, bringing profound new insights to the music of that time. All four members are freelance musicians in high demand in the Boston area. Each musician can look back at years of experience in the chamber music world and in solo playing, while also serving in leading positions in orchestras. 'Fin de Siècle’s' successfully performed throughout New England.
